Example Day at Os

Os Summer Hockey Training: FUN, FAST, EFFECTIVE!
On-ice sessions will include one hour of player development, focusing on four key individual skills: skating, play with the puck, play without the puck, and COMPETING!

Off-ice sessions will include one hour of plyometrics, bounding, stick-handling and shooting!

SKATING/OVER-SPEED:

  • Over-speed skating - improves speed and balance by challenging the player to get out of their “comfort zone” and execute skating drills at top speed, without worrying about falling or making mistakes.
  • A huge component of increasing speed is being able to utilize the ice in an efficient manner to your advantage.
  • Under-speed skating - improves skating technique by focusing on edge work and stride efficiency
  • Off-ice plyometrics and other hockey-specific dryland training - builds leg power and core muscles to make more explosive hockey players.

PUCK HANDLING/PASSING/SHOOTING:

  • Flow Drills - We put players in high tempo situations that require quick lateral movement and decision making. This also encourages creativity and requires soft hands and puck protection in tight situations.
  • On-ice over-speed skating with puck - forces players to handle the puck at a higher speed than
they're comfortable with-“we teach the girl’s it is okay to lose the puck in these types of drills”.
  • Scoring drills - teaches high percentage shots and moves.
The little things that make a good player great.
  • Small-area games - challenges players to get their head up while handling the puck in traffic;
these games provide players more touches on the puck and encourage creativity.

COMPETING:

  • Body position and puck protection are two components that the girls need to focus on.
They need to be aware of where the puck is in reference to their body and opposing players.
  • There is no checking in girls hockey, but there is angling and body contact,
we try to show them that with the specific competitive drills.
  • Finishing drills all the way to the net…we teach the girls to go to the net and not circle away from it.

CONCLUSION:

The Overspeed staff feels one of their best qualities is their ability to communicate and get through to
the girls coming in and out of their programs! Os deals with girls that want to be there and get better
and they all make each other better…we help them believe they can reach their goals!
